Pumpkin head photos for friends, couples and families

Each example starts from a casual snapshot, the kind already on your phone, and comes back with every head swapped for a glowing jack-o'-lantern.

Friends · a fall trend since 2020

Your friend group, from a backyard photo you already took

Friends have worn carved pumpkins over their heads for fall photos since at least 2020, the Daily Dot reports, and the trend returns every October. These four friends got the Colored smoke setting: the same flannel, cardigan and sneakers, the same string lights, with orange and teal smoke drifting behind them.

A couple shot without balancing two pumpkins

Couple posts led this year's wave: on September 30, @nataliireynoldss posted the two of them in black under pumpkin heads, captioned "Pumpkin head photoshoot". One photo of the two of you on the sidewalk is enough; Spooky porch moves you to a candlelit porch with cobwebs and low fog.

Three generations in one frame, no field trip

A family pumpkin head video opened the 2026 season on TikTok (@the_life_of_aivax, September 24: "Been wanting to do this for years"). Getting everyone and five pumpkins to one field is the hard part. This front-steps photo of five adults got Cute pumpkins: friendly carved faces, fairy lights and small pumpkins at their feet.

What you get from one group photo

The template swaps heads and sets the scene; the people, clothes and framing come from your photo.

Everyone in the photo, in one run

Upload one picture of the whole group and every person gets a jack-o'-lantern of their own. You don't need a separate photo for each person.

Outfits, hands and poses stay as they were

Only the heads change. Flannel, knitwear, jeans and boots, arms around shoulders and where everyone stands all come from your photo, so friends can still tell who is who.

Smoke, candlelight and a pumpkin patch, no props

Real shoots mean measuring heads, padding a hollowed pumpkin with foam and keeping smoke bombs away from kids and pets. Here the carving, the glow inside and the colored smoke are part of the picture.

Ready to move when you are

Classic pumpkin head posts are short clips set to "Oh Klahoma" by Jack Stauber. Tap Animate it under your result to turn the photo into a 5-second video (60 credits), then add the song when you post.

Before you upload: group photo tips and sizes

Every pumpkin sits on the shoulders the template can see, so the clearer everyone stands, the cleaner the result. For groups, keep Match photo or 4:3 so nobody gets squeezed out.

Works well

  1. Four adults standing side by side, full length, on a white background

    Everyone in frame, shoulders included

Full length or waist up. Cut-off heads and shoulders leave the pumpkin nowhere to sit.

  2. Two adults standing side by side with a gap between their heads

    A little space between heads

Leaning in is fine; heads pressed cheek to cheek can merge into one pumpkin.

  3. Flannel shirt, knit sweater, jeans and boots laid out on white

    Dressed for the final picture

Pick outfits before the photo: flannel, chunky knits, denim or all black.

Skip these

  1. A group photo where one man's head is partly hidden behind others

    Heads hidden behind someone

A half-covered head may not get its own pumpkin. Make sure every face shows.

  2. A close-up selfie cropped at the chin with no shoulders visible

    Selfies cropped at the chin

With no shoulders, the pumpkin floats. For a solo close-up, the Transformation video has a Pumpkin head look.

  3. People who didn't agree to it

It's still their likeness under a pumpkin. Ask before you upload or share.

Pumpkin head photoshoot, answered

How do you do a pumpkin head photoshoot without a real pumpkin?+

Upload one photo of the people you want in it, pick a setting and press Generate. Each head is replaced by a carved jack-o'-lantern glowing from inside, so there's nothing to carve, wear or haul to a field. It isn't a filter laid on top: the heads and light are redrawn, and Colored smoke or Cute pumpkins keep your own background.

Can couples do the pumpkin head trend from one photo?+

Yes. One photo of the two of you is enough, and each of you gets your own pumpkin. Leave a little space between your heads so the pumpkins don't merge. If you'd rather wear matching costumes than pumpkins, Couple Costume works from two separate photos.

How many people can be in one pumpkin head photo?+

There's no set number: the template works on everyone it can see. It does best when each head is clearly visible and not tiny, so a family on the front steps or four friends side by side come out cleaner than a crowd shot from across the yard.

Is it OK to use a family photo with kids in it?+

Yes. Every face, kids' included, ends up under a pumpkin, and Pumpkin Head results never appear in the public gallery on any plan. No child has to wear a heavy real pumpkin either. Use photos of your own family, or ask the parents first.

Is this the same as the pumpkin head illusion?+

No. The pumpkin head illusion, third on New Engen's October 2026 TikTok trend list, is a video trick: someone holds a real pumpkin close to the lens so it covers a friend's head while the friend dances. This template makes the photoshoot version, where everyone appears to wear a carved pumpkin.

What should everyone wear for pumpkin head photos?+

Whatever you want in the final picture, because outfits come through unchanged. Flannel, chunky knits, denim and all black are the classic looks; mustard, rust and cream sit well in Pumpkin patch, and dark outfits stand out against Colored smoke.

How much does a pumpkin head photo cost?+

3 credits at 1K, 4 at 2K and 5 at 4K, one photo per run. New accounts get 10 credits, enough for 3 photos at 1K. The Generate button shows the price before you start, and failed runs are refunded.

Which pumpkin head setting should we pick?+

Colored smoke keeps your background and adds orange and teal smoke at dusk. Pumpkin patch and Spooky porch replace the background, which helps when the original is a kitchen or a parking lot. Cute pumpkins carves friendly faces and adds fairy lights, the gentlest pick for family photos.
