What does an AI pet costume photo look like?

Each example starts from one ordinary phone photo of a pet at home.

The same orange tabby cat on a sofa in three costumes: a pumpkin suit, a hot dog bun and a white ghost sheet

NRF survey · Sep 22, 2026

The three costumes pets wear most this year

In the National Retail Federation's 2026 Halloween survey, the most popular pet costumes are a pumpkin (11.6%), a hot dog (5.9%) and a ghost (2.8%), with $0.92 billion going to pet costumes overall. All three are here, plus a witch and a vampire, from the same photo.

Cats

A witch hat on a cat that would never keep one on

This orange tabby only had to sit on the sofa for one photo. In the result she wears a black hat and a purple star cape, a jack-o'-lantern glows on the side table and the living room stays as it was.

Big dogs

A costume that fits a big dog

Large and extra-large dog costumes are hard to find and harder to get on; people search for XL pumpkin suits every October. Here a Bernese mountain dog photographed on the porch steps wears a vampire cape and bow tie sized to the dog in the photo.

You and your pet

One photo, both of you in costume

Upload one photo of you with your dog and everyone in the frame gets the look, each costume sized to its wearer. The porch stays as it was, with a few jack-o'-lanterns added. The small print in the corner is the photo that went in.

Why use AI for your dog or cat's Halloween costume?

An AI dog or cat costume photo skips the parts pets and owners like least.

No costume to buy, fit or chew

In a MetLife Pet survey of 1,000 owners (September 2025), 46% had bought a last-minute pet outfit that didn't fit or never got worn, and 43% said their pet wrecked one. Here your pet sits for a single photo and the costume only exists in the picture.

Coat, markings and eyes stay

The template edits your own photo and is set to keep your pet's breed, face, coat color, markings, eyes and size, and the face of anyone with it; only the costumes and a little Halloween light are added.

Good pet photos make faithful costume pictures

Animal likeness is where AI slips most, and most slips start with the photo. One calm, clear shot does more than any setting.

Good pet photos

  1. A grey-and-white cat sitting and facing the camera on a white background

    Whole body, facing you

Ears to paws in frame with a little space around, so the costume has somewhere to go.

  2. A calico cat's face in window light with sharp eyes and patches

Eyes and markings in clear light

Daylight or a bright room. Patches, stripes and eye color can only be kept if they show.

  3. A beagle lying calmly on a white background

    Sitting or lying still

A calm pose gives the costume a steady body to settle on.

  4. You and your pet together

Everyone in the photo gets a costume, sized to each of you. Sit side by side with every face clear.

Photos that drift

  1. Two kittens curled together with a person's hand on them

Tangled pets or a stray hand

Bodies piled together or a hand cut off at the edge can blur or swap features. Give everyone their own space in the frame.

  2. A black dog as a dark silhouette against a bright window

    Dark, backlit or blurry shots

Black coats and window glare lose the detail that makes your pet recognizable.

  3. A small dog in a plastic cone collar on a sofa

A cone, harness or outfit already on

Accessories can tangle with the new costume. A bare photo gives the cleanest result.

  4. An extreme close-up of a dog's nose

    Nose-only close-ups

The costume needs a body to sit on. Show at least the head and chest.

Questions about pets, costumes and AI photos

Will the photo still look like my dog or cat?+

Usually, if the photo is clear: the template edits your own photo and is set to keep your pet's face, coat color, markings and eyes. AI can still slip on long fluffy coats, all-black pets, unusual breeds and busy poses, so compare the result with your photo before posting. Failed runs are refunded; a finished photo you don't like is not, so start from your clearest shot.

Do dogs and cats mind wearing Halloween costumes?+

Many do. Texas A&M veterinarian Dr. Lori Teller has said some pets freeze when dressed up while others whine, paw or chew at the costume, and that a pet that's clearly uncomfortable is better off without one. Here your pet only sits for an ordinary photo, so it never wears anything.

What should my dog be for Halloween?+

Start with the favorites: a pumpkin, a hot dog and a ghost topped the NRF's 2026 list of pet costumes, and all three are here along with a witch and a vampire. Make two or three looks from the same photo and see which suits your dog before you buy anything real.

Can I put two pets, or me and my pet, in one photo?+

Yes, if you're in the same photo: every person and pet in the frame gets the costume, sized to each of you. Keep every face clear and not too small. For separate photos of you and your pet, Couple Costume puts the two of you side by side.

Can I turn the costume photo into a video?+

Yes. Under the finished photo, Animate it opens Animate a Halloween Photo with your costumed pet already in place; pick Spooky ambience or Jump scare for a short clip with sound. The photo becomes the first frame, so the video starts from the exact look you liked.

What size is the photo, and can I print it?+

Pick 1K, 2K, or 4K: the smaller size is plenty for posts and profile pictures, the larger one for prints and phone wallpapers. Auto keeps your photo's shape, or pick a square or portrait frame before you generate.

Can I make a pet costume photo for free?+

Yes, with sign-up credits: a costume photo costs 3 credits and new accounts get 10, enough for 3 photos. Turning one into a video costs more. Failed runs are refunded.

Can I enter an AI costume photo in a pet costume contest?+

Only if the contest accepts AI-made entries. Many ask for a real costume and an unedited photo, so check the rules first, and label the photo as AI-made when you share it.
