What should I be for Halloween? See it on you first

Three ways to settle it with one photo, before you spend anything.

The same woman in eight AI Halloween costumes: vampire, witch, skeleton, zombie, werewolf, black cat, ghost bride and scarecrow

Compare

Line up the classics on one photo

Run the same photo through Vampire, Witch, Werewolf and the rest, then compare them side by side. Witch and vampire are the two costumes US adults plan most this year (NRF Halloween survey, September 2026).

Before and after: a woman's mirror selfie and the fortune teller costume Surprise me chose for her

Can't decide

Let Surprise me choose

Surprise me picks one original costume that suits your photo, from outside the eight on the list. In this example it chose a fortune teller; another run may land somewhere else entirely.

A man in a costume shop holding a vampire cape and checking his phone before he buys

Before you buy

Preview it before you buy or DIY

See whether pale makeup or a wide witch brim works with your face before you order anything. Black cat and Scarecrow are mostly a turtleneck, jeans or flannel, so the result doubles as a DIY plan.

What each AI costume look includes

A complete costume on the person you already are, in the room you already took the photo in.

The same woman before and in the vampire look, with her face, hair and pose unchanged

Still you, head to toe

The look changes your clothes and adds makeup. Your face, skin tone, hairstyle, body shape, pose and framing all come from your photo.

Close-up of the same bedroom shelf before and after: candles and dried flowers, then string lights, a candelabra and a small pumpkin

Your room, dressed for October

Your background stays the one you shot in. The template adds warm string lights and a few small Halloween touches, so it still reads as your photo.

Face close-ups of four looks: skeleton face paint, werewolf ears, a ghost bride veil and black cat whiskers

Makeup comes with the costume

Each look is a full outfit with makeup to match: skull paint for Skeleton, fur and pointed ears for Werewolf, a long veil for Ghost bride, whiskers for Black cat.

A man in playful zombie face paint laughing at an office Halloween party, with no blood or wounds

Spooky, not gory

No blood, wounds or fake injuries in any look; even Zombie is grey-green paint and frayed clothes. Safe for the work chat and the family group.

Which photo shows the whole costume?

The result keeps your framing, so what the camera sees is what gets dressed.

Do

  1. Full-length photo of a woman holding her phone at chest height on a white background

Head to toe in the frame

A full-length mirror selfie shows the cape, hem and shoes; a close-up only gets collar and makeup.

  2. Waist-up photo of a man with both hands visible on a white background

Hands where the camera sees them

Werewolf adds fur to your hands and Witch hands you a broom.

  3. A woman's face evenly lit from the front on a white background

    Light in front of you

Face a window or lamp so your face stays bright and sharp.

  4. Your hair as you'll wear it

The look keeps your hairstyle, so style it the way you plan to on the night.

Avoid

  1. A mirror selfie where the phone hides the woman's face

    Phone over your face

In a mirror selfie, hold the phone at chest height, not eye level.

  2. A man in dark shadow in front of a bright window

    A bright window behind you

Backlight turns your face into a shadow the look can't keep.

  3. Two friends squeezed into one selfie at a café

    Two or more people

This template dresses one person. For two, use Couple Costume.

  4. A child's photo

Costume Try-On is made for adult photos.

Costume try-on questions, from cost to kids

What should I be for Halloween if I can't decide?+

Try the two or three looks you're torn between on the same photo and compare them side by side; most people know at a glance. If nothing on the list feels right, Surprise me picks an original costume that suits your photo.

Can I try on a Halloween costume with my photo before I buy it?+

Yes, as a preview: you see the look on your own face, hair and body, which shows whether the colors and makeup suit you. It can't show sizing, fabric or fit, so check the size chart before you order.

Is the AI Halloween costume generator free?+

You can start free: new accounts get 10 credits, enough for 3 costume photos at 1K. After that a photo costs 3 credits at 1K, 4 at 2K or 5 at 4K; the price is on the Generate button and failed runs are refunded. It runs in the browser, so there's no app to install.

Does the costume change my face or body?+

No. It changes your clothes and adds makeup, while your face, skin tone, hairstyle, body shape and pose come from your photo. Skeleton, Zombie and Werewolf paint or add fur over parts of your face by design, and a side angle or dim light can make any look drift.

Can it dress me as a movie, TV or anime character?+

No. All nine looks are original costumes, and Surprise me never picks a character from a film, show or game. Choose the closest classic, such as Witch or Vampire, and add the signature pieces yourself.

Can I turn my costume photo into a video?+

Yes. Every result has an Animate it button that opens Halloween photo animation with your photo already loaded; a short clip costs 60 credits by default.

Can I try costumes on my kid's photo?+

Not on this template: Costume Try-On is made for adult photos. For a family picture, Pumpkin Head turns everyone in one photo into a pumpkin, and those results stay private.
