What is the Hit the Road Dude meme?

Hit the Road Dude, also called the State Property or Private Property meme, is a 2025 phone video turned AI trend: a pickup driver catches people fishing a private pond, hears “I thought it was state property”, repeats “State?” in disbelief and sends them off with “Hit the road, dude. This ain't no state property, this is private property.” Hit the Road Dude AI versions put a dog, a cat or anyone else in the driver's seat.

The pickup template

One pickup window and a very long stare

The whole template is one shot through the window of a white pickup, with woods outside. The driver leans out with a paw over the door and barely moves: a hard stare into the lens, one scornful look away, then straight back for the order to leave. Whoever is filming is only a voice. Here a pit bull in a plaid shirt plays the driver; the script below goes line by line.

Why it caught on

Why “State?” is the punchline

“Hit the road” just means leave, and “state property” means public land owned by the state. The joke is the gap in scale: a few people fishing a pond meet a landowner who hears “state property” as an insult, repeats it as a question and lets the silence do the work. The line fits any “this is my turf” moment, so people keep reusing it. The original phone video was posted on August 21, 2025 and drew lip-sync and green-screen remakes within two weeks. The AI wave began in late September 2026: how-to guides appeared from September 28, a bulldog version followed on October 1, and by mid-October cat, dog, space and fantasy versions filled the feeds. So the original is real; the pet and character versions are AI remakes.

Pet versions

Cats can run the pickup too

A cat in a banana hat swings a paw out of the window as if waving the anglers off. Pets are the most common way to post this meme: a cat or dog already acts like it owns the yard, and the driver’s seat makes it look like it owns the land.

What does the driver say in the Hit the Road Dude meme?

The State Property meme script, line by line, as it is usually quoted. Transcripts differ by a word here and there.

The pit bull driver mid-line, mouth open, one paw hanging over the pickup door
  1. Driver

“Who told you you could fish here?”

A paw comes up at the lens, then the stare starts.

  2. Behind the phone

“I thought it was state property.”

The angler holding the phone, never on screen.

  3. Driver

    “State? This? State? It ain't.”

After a long, disbelieving pause. The voice behind the phone answers “Yeah.” in between, and this is where the head turns away.

  4. Driver

“Hit the road, dude. This ain't no state property, this is private property.”

Straight back into the lens for the line everyone quotes.

  5. Behind the phone

    “Oh, okay.”

    The angler gives in.

  6. Driver

    “What is your name, man?”

The paw rises again, and the video ends on the question.

Hit the Road Dude remix ideas: whose turf is it?

The line works for any tiny patch someone guards like a ranch. Swap the pond for your own turf and caption it.

Your cat, guarding the garden

The neighbour's cat crosses the lawn one more time and finds out this ain't no state property.

Caption it: “My cat when the neighbour's cat walks through the garden.”

Your dog, guarding the sofa

The dog that barks at every delivery finally gets a pickup and a landowner's stare to back it up.

Caption it: “POV: you sat in his spot on the sofa.”

You, defending your parking spot

Lean out of the pickup yourself for the space outside your house, the driveway or the office chair you consider yours.

Caption it: “When someone parks in front of my house again.”

The friend who always calls shotgun

With their OK, put a friend behind the wheel and tag them in the group chat: the front seat is private property now.

Caption it: “Every road trip, same speech.”

FAQ

Hit the Road Dude AI FAQ: sound, pets and price

Does the video have sound? Does the driver say the lines?+

It comes with a voice and ambience generated with the video, and the template asks for the meme's lines and the pause before “State?”. It is not the original recording, so the wording and mouth timing can differ from the meme.

Is this Hit the Road Dude AI generator free?+

No. Each video uses credits: 554 for the default 15-second 720p video, and 554–830 depending on the length and resolution you pick. The Generate button shows the exact price before anything is charged.

Can my dog or cat be the driver?+

Yes. Upload one pet per photo. The template's driver is already a dog with its paws over the door, so a cat or dog fits the pose.

Can two people be in one Hit the Road Dude video?+

No. Each video has one driver and nobody else in the cab; the other voice belongs to whoever is filming and never appears on screen. For a friend's turn, make a second video with their photo.

Does it include the “lock 'em up” part?+

No. The template ends on “What is your name, man?”; the phone call that comes later in the original video is not part of it.

Is Hit the Road Dude a song? Where are the lyrics?+

No. It's a spoken exchange from a 2025 phone video, so the “lyrics” are the lines in the script above. Some people play the older song “Hit the Road Jack” over their version when they post, but the meme itself is the dialogue.

Why doesn't the driver look like my photo?+

The window crops the driver to head and chest, and the head turns away once mid-video, so turned, covered or tiny faces drift the most. Check the photo list above and generate again; every run comes out a little different.

Can I use a celebrity's or a stranger's photo?+

No. Use your own photo, your pet's, or a friend's who agreed to it. Don't upload public figures, children or anyone who hasn't said yes.
